SUB-TROPIC CACTI GARDEN

MIAMI, FL

For this project, the client wanted to channel the distinct modern landscapes of homes he admired in Los Angeles, California. Translating that vision to Florida’s climate, we created a subtropical cacti garden featuring a curated collection of cacti species sourced locally from South Florida growers. To add structure and depth, we incorporated large scale boulders and balanced the composition with drifts of native Florida wildflowers, softening the bold sculptural forms of the cacti.

To stay true to the desert inspired aesthetic, we followed a xeriscape design concept. An approach to landscaping that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental irrigation. By selecting drought tolerant plants and using natural materials, xeriscaping creates a water efficient, environmentally responsible garden that thrives within its ecological region.

The ground cover was finished with coquina sand, a natural material composed of crushed limestone and shell fragments that has long been used in Florida for its durability and permeability. Coquina not only suppresses weeds and allows rainwater to filter through, but it also compacts beautifully after rainfall, giving the garden a clean, seamless appearance. Its warm, pale tone highlights the rich green and blue hues of the cacti, allowing each plant to stand out as a striking focal point.

The result is a truly low-maintenance landscape. Both regionally grounded and visually reminiscent of the desert gardens of California. Tailored to the subtropical conditions of Florida.
