ZEN ATRIUM
Miami Beach, Florida
This client wanted art at the heart of their home. Located in the center of the residence, the atrium is visible from every floor and angle, making it a constant visual focal point. We knew the design required a thoughtful and highly detailed approach.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese Zen gardens. Known for their artful simplicity and tranquil composition. We translated those principles to the Florida climate. To do this, we identified species commonly used in Zen gardens and selected their tropical counterparts. For ground covers, we chose plants that mimic the lush, soft appearance of moss but are capable of thriving in heat and humidity, allowing us to create moss-like mounds.
A hand selected tree from our local grower was placed slightly off to the side, yet it remains the central focal point. Honoring the principle of empty space. Its natural form and elegant arch perfectly complement the atrium, and over time it will gradually create a soft canopy above. Ferns both small and large, were layered to add depth and texture. Large boulders were strategically positioned to introduce an architectural element while also serving as a place to sit for quiet reflection or meditation.
The design was completed with a slate stone walkway, carefully arranged like puzzle pieces, and an assortment of accent rocks in different sizes and shapes to create rhythm and textural detail.
This atrium now invites the homeowners to step into a moment of silence, meditation, and reconnection with nature. An ever-present piece of living art at the center of their daily lives.
