ZEN ENTRYWAY
Miami Beach, FL
The zen entryway serves as an extension of the atrium project, introducing guests to the home with a continuation of the Japanese garden theme. We curated a selection of upright growing plants, some emerging through the designed openings of the overhang, their branches extending in various directions to add character and movement.
During our maintenance visits, we prune and shape these specimens using bonsai inspired techniques, encouraging expressive growth patterns while ensuring branches are not lost beneath new leaf growth.
Within the understory, we introduced a pairing of plants with round leaves and spearlike forms. Both producing bright yellow flowers throughout the season. This combination creates a dynamic dialogue between soft and structural shapes, adding texture and seasonal interest.
We deliberately avoided the expected approach commonly seen in entryways, which often rely on a single repetitive planting. Instead, we created a design that evokes the feeling of a forest glimpsed in slices. Layered, varied, and full of discovery.
To complete the installation, we added small grey rocks and miniature versions of the boulders used within the atrium, creating continuity between the two spaces and establishing a harmonious flow through the home.
